Court orders seizure of magazine for alleged injuries to Spain’s heir to the throne
A judge in Spain's national court ordered the seizure of the satire magazine "El Jueves" for alleged injuries to the heir of the Spanish throne Friday.
In a surprise ruling, Judge Juan del Olmo ordered the magazine and newstands in Madrid and Barcelona to withdraw the weekly publication because the cover cartoon depicts Prince Felipe and his wife, Princess Letizia, having sex. Under the banner headline of 2,500 euros per child -- in reference to a recent Spanish initiative to subsidize families with new births -- the Prince of Asturias tells his wife, "You see? If you keep pregnant ..." to which Letizia replies, "This is the closest thing to work I've done in my life." The former journalist-turned-royal gave birth to the couple's second child earlier this year.
Del Olmo also ordered police to seize printing plates from the magazine's facilities in Madrid and Barcelona and shut down the on-line edition. He has also ordered the magazine's director to identify the authors of the cartoon. If found guilty, those held responsible could face 6 months to two years in prison for defaming members of the royal family.
