The author and the TV host are ending their marriage.
British author Salman Rushdie and television personality Padma Lakshmi are getting divorced, Rushdie’s spokeswoman said on Monday. The announcement comes just two weeks after he was awarded knighthood.
Rushdie is best known for the controversy he stirred with his novel “The Satanic Verses,” which outraged many Muslims due to perceived blasphemy and sparked death threats that forced him to live in hiding for nine years. His recent knighting provoked fierce protests by some Muslims in Iran and Pakistan.
Lakshmi, a former model and actress born in India, is the host of “Top Chef” on the Bravo network. She is also the author of two cookbooks, the latest of which is set to be released in September 2007.
Rushdie married Lakshmi, who is over 20 years his junior, in 2004 in Manhattan. She was his fourth wife and the couple had no children.
