GM hopes “Transformers” will Boost Car Sales

Can robots in disguise lead to bigger profits for the Detroit automaker?
It is clear that by watching the new “Transformers” movie that the robotic cars, not the actors, are the main attraction. General Motors hopes these will lead to more people buying their cars.
"You're going to see these cars as the heroes. You're not going to see the other actors," said Dino Bernacchi, GM's associate director of branded entertainment. "These cars are the stars, literally, in the movie."
The Detroit automaker is spending millions to promote tie-ins to the movie, but have not given specific numbers. GM is primarily aiming at the 18 to 34 year old audience, hoping that the film will lead audiences to buy the cars used as models for the robotic heroes and villains. The logos of its various auto brands, such as Chevy and Hummer, get plenty of screen time throughout the movie.
“Transformers” is based on the 80s toy franchise of the same name that spawned a popular cartoon series. The film, as well as the cartoon series, concerns the fight between the good “Autobots” versus the evil “Decepticons.”
