Business Magazine Forbes announces the most powerful celebrities in the world, with David Beckham being in the lead from Britain, Oprah from the United States
Forbes, the well-known business magazine, released its list of the top 100 celebrities of the world, with soccer player David Beckham being the leading star from Britain.
Beckham, who came in 15th on the list after ranking 43rd last year, is the former soccer star of Real Madrid and England, and will move to LA Galaxy this summer.
His recent increase in salary and sponsors have accounted for his rise in the list.
Other Britons who ranked highly on the list, which takes stars’ earnings along with their media presence into account, included musicians the Rolling Stones and Elton John.
Also to appear on the list were Harry Potter author JK Rowling (48th), as well as child actors Daniel Radcliffe (79th) and Emma Watson (97th) from the Harry Potter films.
American Idol’s Simon Cowell, musicians U2 and model Kate Moss came in at 21st, 22nd, and 74th place, respectively.
Number one on the list was American talk show host Oprah Winfrey with earnings of about $260 million, and an estimated 30 million viewers each week in just the United States.
Winfrey lost her previously held first place last year to Tom Cruise, who slipped to eighth place this year.
"A combination of strong financials and her enduring influence on the US public, which could see her affecting the outcome of next year’s US elections, is enough to propel her back into the top spot," a Forbes spokeswoman said.
Winfrey was followed by golfer Tiger Woods, and the recording artist Madonna.
