Miss Universe Pageant Causes a Stir
28-May-2007

Protesters in Mexico City boycott the pageant, which they say is sexist.
The annual Miss Universe Pageant will crown its 2007 beauty queen tonight. Of the 77 contestants, one of the women is the competition's first Rastafarian. Despite controversy from many countries, including the Swedes, who decided to drop out from the contest because they feel that the competition unfairly and misleadingly portrays females, the competition has produced winners in the past who commit themselves to humanitarian efforts.
Last year's winner, Zuleyka Rivera of Puerto Rico, became an advocate for HIV/AIDS research and education. "I have learned more in the past year than I could have ever imagined. I have met people from all around the world, and I hope I helped them to make a difference in their fight against HIV/AIDS," Rivera said.
Still at the competition's site in Mexico City, protesters from around the city have voiced concerns. Staging a mock pageant, participants held witty signs, featuring "Miss Marijuana" and "Miss Sexual Health," among others, while spokespeople for the pageant say that it is fair and looks for integrity in its contestants.
It will certainly be an interesting show to catch!
