Bound Stems - The Logic of Building the Body Plan
- Bound Stems are a five-piece band from Chicago, who started creating melodies sometime in 2002. The sound is alternative with droplets of pop here and there, but without the cliche infections. Piece by piece the songs took my hand and led me down a twisty garden path and all with my approval, especially when male and female harmonies combined on “Risking Life and Limb for the Coupon.” With idyllic moments like “Saw your empty thoughts off for your stash, it’s fine,” there is no surprise this stood out from the rest. “Wake Up, Ma and Pa are gone” brings together visions of the future. The idealistic stance of the line “We’re leaving for... something bigger than us,” is something we all flirt with at one point or other, but only some of us act on. I can’t help but feel this is not a passing fad for this songs character or indeed the band. The short offering of songs is not unlike Bound Stems, who have released a similar amount before.
The shortness and jab-like qualities of certain lines and indeed the whole album will persuade the listener to sit up and question where this band has been their whole life.
