Maypops - Spirits of Agnew
- Maypops is the kind of band you’d hear playing all over college campuses, but never on pop radio. While many bands in the pop/rock category produce at least one song that can be distributed across mainstream airways, Maypops stay true to their own style. Their debut album, Spirits of Agnew, is a breath of fresh air.
On this disc Maypops take the overdone theme of lost love, and turn it into clever poetry--for instance, “And if you think I need you/That is correct my sweet placebo/And if you think I’m greedy/I won’t protest/No, No” (Blackeyed Susan). While most of the tracks deal with a similar theme, some speak more about life in general. “Floor it up the mountainside/Let’s see how long that we can fly/What a thrill to be free/Just the devil and me/Bein’ lazy” (Lazy).
Spirits of Agnew is an album for anyone looking for an alternative to the typical alternative rock.
