Mariah Carey - The Emancipation of Mimi
- Mariah Carey is the best selling female artist of all time for a reason - she puts out quality records. On her latest offering, The Emancipation of Mimi, Carey puts forth her greatest effort yet, mixing her signature smooth R&B style with the powerhouse vocals that made her a superstar.
"It's Like That," the albums first single has enjoyed heavy radio airplay, while the sexy video has garnered the top spot on all the major video countdown shows. The single, Careys' strongest in years, is a stripped down version of your basic party anthem, and the simple beat makes everyone get up and shake it on the dance floor (I know, I've seen it myself). Her second single "We Belong Together" combines all the best of Mariah, a heartfelt ballad with an R&B feel.
The album as a whole has that funky, soulful 70s kind of vibe that is a throwback to the good old days when music was more about feeling then marketability. The Emancipation of Mimi creates a mood that is fun and laid back, with just the right touch of emotion.
And while critics have long panned the songstress for her abundance of high notes, they are what sets her apart from other songbirds who can put out great songs, but don't have the vocal chops to back it up.
The best part of the album is how Carey manages to "keep it real" in a way that other female artists have not. It focuses on what is good about her life, and not about how hard it is to be rich and famous. The best line is on the track "Get Your Number" featuring Jermaine Dupri. When she sings "I got a house in Capri and my own G4, and that Benz with the doors that lift up from floor" she shows it's not just the guys that can show up to the club and flaunt what they have.
The Emancipation of Mimi sets the stage for what should be a major comeback for the R&B diva. And with all the wanna be Mariah Carey's in music industry today, its nice to hear the original throwing it down once again.
