My Grampy Can't Walk

by Vanita Oelschager

A charming story about a grandpa who can't walk, but can do so many other things

This children's book tackles a rather grown up subject. Jim Oelschlager, the author's husband, has Multiple Sclerosis, and this is his real life story through the eyes of his grandchildren. Though confined to a wheelchair, Grampy is very much a special part of his six grandchildren's lives. Together they share stories, notice the changing skies, snuggle in bed and take rides on his wonderful riding machine.

This book sheds a light for the young reader on what it is like to have a disability and how normal and even fun life can be despite it. It's an important lesson to learn, not just for the child who has someone in his family with any disability, but perhaps even more importantly for those children who don't.

The illustrations by Robin Hegan and Kristin Blackwood are soft watercolors that evoke a warm and special time and an even more special relationship. The bottom of each page highlights a few words from the text, which I found attractive, but the rhyme scheme of the text itself did not always flow.

This book speaks to the reader about diversity, acceptance, compassion and love. All proceeds from the sale of this book go to benefit those with Multiple Sclerosis. My Grampy Can't Walk is appropriate for ages 4 through 8.
