Poetry: Taking Its Course
by Mary Harwell Sayler
A wonderful and educational resource for poets.
Mary Harwell Sayler has packed ‘Poetry: Taking Its Course’ with a wealth of information to engage, teach and inspire poets of all ages. This book—which explores examples of the author's own work and that of poets—can act as an informative guide for budding poets who want to learn the facets of their craft. In a fascinating style, Sayler discusses topics including: how one goes about writing a: sonnet, limerick, villanelle, ghazal, haiku or a cinquain; as well as the difference between Blank Verse and Free Verse.
I found “Session Four - Rhythm: The Poem's Heartbeat” of special interest. With so much to be learned there, I'll be re-reading this section to squeeze out every bit of insight it contains. Sayler also explores how to: prepare one’s work for publication; choose a publisher; enter contests; keep an organized record of one’s work; and much more. This book is like a candy box; one keeps going back into it because the contents are so scrumptious.
‘Poetry: Taking Its Course’ is a "must have" addition to any poet's library, and would make great reading for anyone who wants to know more about this amazing art form.
