Daddy, You're My Hero!
by Michelle Ferguson-Cohen
Helping children cope with parents in the millitary.
This book is the first of a two-part series aimed at
the children of
those
in the military. The second book, "Mommy You're My
Hero," is similar in
style
and substance to the first.
Today, with so many of our service personnel deployed
to other
countries
for lengthy periods of time, this book is both timely
and insightful.
It is
not just for the child "left behind" in times of
conflict, but also for
all
children to understand the sacrifices parents make for
them.
The book is a board book with colorful drawings and a
rhyming text,
written for children ages four to eight.
During the Viet Nam War while I was a teenager, my
parents never discussed about it to me because war
experience was not to be talked about in any context
to young children. Today,
especially after 9/11, our patriotism and sense of
global awareness
runs
deep and is accentuated by the vast media machine.
"Daddy you're My
Hero"
is a starting point of conversation for the young
child in both the
classroom and at home.
